CARLSBAD RANCH

SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO

The Carlsbad Ranch is located in the foothills of the Guadalupe Mountains approximately ten miles southwest of Carlsbad, NM.  Access is south of Carlsbad on Hwy. 285 to Dark Canyon Road. 

The Carlsbad Ranch is an approximately 37 section ranch with varied terrain which is permitted for 437 animal units.  Carlsbad Ranch is part of the La Paloma Cattle Co.  The owner has decided to offer the Dark Canyon Allotment which includes the head quarters.

There are some open bottomlands that have been chemically sprayed for catclaw ,creosote and greasewood.  This has opened the area to renewed growth of native grasses which include various species of grama grass and other native forbes.

Historically, the area gets somewhere between 11-15inches of rain/moisture yearly.  On the hills are several native plants, sotol, yucca, lecheguilla and century plant that provide stalks and blooms in the spring and early summer  that  are high protein  and good forage.  Although this has been a dry year so far, there is still abundant forage over the ranch.

 IMPROVEMENTS:  Good improvements consisting of main residence, a hand house, numerous sheds for livestock, equipment, tools and storage.  Livestock working pens complete with scales, covered working area with squeeze chute and calf table and loading chute.  The large barn and two hay barns give excellent year round storage areas.

Main Home:  1547 sq ft, 3BR and 1B.  A good working fireplace is in living area which is open to the kitchen.  There is a 2 car garage located adjacent to the main house.

Hand home:  Nice single wide manufactured home with 2BR and 2B. 

Livestock water:  The ranch is well watered by 8 wells scattered over the ranch with pipelines and plenty of water troughs.  There are also 3 taps furnished from City of Carlsbad water  line that are cost free.  Several of the wells have been equipped with solar panels.  There is a year-round spring that provides water for several storage tanks on the back ridge making the back country better utilized.

VEGETATION:  Native grasses include, blue, black, sideoats, and hairy grama, and tobosa.  Some mesquite, walnut, little leaf sumac, oak brush, creosote, lecugilla and some cactus. 

The Carlsbad Ranch is located within 10 miles of Carlsbad NM.  It is approximately 150 miles to El Paso TX and Midland/Odessa and Lubbock TX.  Cattle auctions are 70 miles away in Roswell NM and 175 miles in Clovis NM.  Both are highly utilized auctions in marketing of cattle in the region. The  headquarters is located  10 minutes from the Carlsbad City Airport.

Wildlife in the region consist of mule deer, barbary sheep, mountain lion, javalina and small game and birds.
